About Us
Welcome to the French-German Cultural Center in Ramallah!

The French-German Cultural Center brings together two institutions in one location:
the Goethe-Institut for the Palestinian Territories and the Ramallah Branch of the Institut français in Jerusalem.

For over ten years, we have been working together on cultural projects in various artistic fields (cinema, visual arts, performing arts, architecture, science…) and offer French and German language courses as well as language exams. Our Robert Schuman Mediatheque offers over 11.000 documents from a wide range of topics. Our Bibliobus also brings a selection of this collection to different cities, visiting schools in the West Bank and East-Jerusalem that teach French and German to their pupils.

The French-German Cultural Center's team is made up of employees from the Goethe-Institut and the Institut français. Though each institution has its own projects and international networks, our cooperation involves working together in different artistic and educational fields and building a common network of Palestinian, French and German actors.

Within our institutional networks, we aim, along with our partners, to reach a very broad public, from language students, members of the artistic and cultural scene, curious individuals as well as those interested in learning more about France and German, beyond Ramallah, in East-Jerusalem, Gaza and other parts of the West Bank

It is thanks to our partnerships with Palestinian institutions that the French-German Cultural Center has become an important local actor in the cultural landscape and active institution in providing capacity-building opportunities. We are also part of EUNIC Palestine, a collective of European cultural institutions that allows a network of partners to meet and work together on projects related to Europe.

This French-German collaboration in Ramallah between the Goethe-Institut and Institut français – with a common house and joint projects - is unique in the world.

We look forward to your visit!

Opening Hours:
Sunday - Thursday from 9 a.m. till 8 p.m.

In the Language Office, you can register for French and German courses, from A1 (beginner) to B2 level (proficient user) as well as higher level courses (upon request). You may also ask for private classes or intensive courses.

In our classes, we only speak French and German, using a communicative approach to help you develop your language skills at a quicker pace.
It is also possible to register for exams that are administered by internationally renowned institutions. These exams provide students and professionals with official documents that certify one’s language skills; for instance, these documents may be required when applying for university or a new job.

The Robert Schuman Multimedia Library offers a wide range of media for adults, adolescents and children in Arabic, French, and German. Our collection includes books, magazines, films, music, apps, games, iPads for on-the-spot use as well as an Xbox One and gaming-PC set up in our gaming corner. Visit us to find out more about France and Germany as well as current themes and trends.

The library is open to the public and the usage of books, media and Wi-Fi in the library is free of charge. Our users can also borrow books from our collection.

Discover Onleihe, a digital service of the Goethe-Institut, which enables you to take out e-books, e-audio and e-papers online!

The program department encourages cultural collaboration between the French, German and Palestinian art scenes by organizing conferences, concerts, exhibitions and other events and making contributions to various festivals in the fields of visual arts, film, dance, music, theatre and literature. The directors and their team also focus on knowledge-based events that discuss current affairs in the fields of culture and science.  Our projects are presented in our center but also at various partner institutions. As we provide a window to the cultural scenes in France and in Germany, we also aim to highlight Palestinian culture and creativity in our respective countries. Through these exchanges, artists and cultural managers are provided with the opportunity to network and acquire new skills and knowledge through capacity-building workshops.

Our Projects

Throughout the world, books are sent by plane, train, donkey or camel to places where there are no libraries; the French-German Cultural Center’s Bibliobus does just that for those learning French and German in Palestinian schools. The aim is to bring books to children and teenagers who do not have easy access to scholastic and literary publications. For this, the bus is stocked with illustrated works and fables in French and German as well as books for beginners and young children. There is also a special collection of books translated into Arabic, along with CDs and DVDs.

"The bus is great! I can't wait for it to come back."
Malik from Beit Sahour

"The bus is so beautiful! We love its look, especially the bumble bee."
Samar and Dalal from Jerusalem

"My favorite thing about the Bibliobus are the drawings, especially the bee that carries the books on its wings."
Akram Abo Odeh from Beit Hanoun (Gaza)
